Microprocessors
Most of my current design work is built around the Intel 80X86 family
of microprocessors. This family offers PC compatibility and good numeric
processing capabilities. I have a large library of modular software
available for use on these processors.
My earlier work was built around the Zilog Z80 family of
microprocessors and peripheral ICs, including the Z80 SIO, PIO, CTC, SCC
and CIO. Even today variants of the Z80 family such as the eZ80
still offers the lowest cost
solution to many real-time embedded control applications.
Modern eZ80 microcontrollers come complete with an ethernet port,
IrDA, 1MB flash, 512KB SRAM, and a 50 MHz processor.
I will be happy to discuss which type of technology would be more
suitable for your application and manufacturing cost requirements.
Programmable Logic Devices
I mainly use Altera Erasable Programmable Logic Devices (EPLDs)
in my designs, and have invested in Altera development software and
device programmers.
PCB Design
At Digital Design Ltd. printed circuits are designed using the
Protel family of PCB CAD tools.
This provides us with tooling for schematic capture,
PCB layout, autorouting, design rule checking, and photoplotter output.
I can design for:
- single sided, double sided or multilayer PTH boards
- through hole or surface mount devices
- ground and power planes
- solder masks, and screen print layers
Usually the final PCB artwork is plotted by Gerber Photoplotter
for best results during the manufacturing process.
Rack Mounted Cards and Systems
For harsh environments such as industrial control,
aviation and marine applications I prefer to use rack-mounted
VME or STE cards.

I have designed a number of cards conforming to the
ANSI/IEEE 1000 specifications.
